Breezing Up (Departure Canto)
Oil & collage on canvas, 36 x 48 in, SOLD
This exhibition takes its inspiration from turn of the century seascape and landscape paintings. The artist literally incorporates the melodramatic and romantic aspects of early 20th century culture through collaging ephemera from art history, poetry and music of the era into his paintings. Composed of three cantos, or segments—departure, journey, and return—“Tempest” tells a metaphorical allegory through images of schooners, ships, skiffs and boats. LoCicero layers art historical traditions with a contemporary twist, creating incredible depth and profound compositions with two-dimensional cut paper and paint. Close attention is rewarded by discovering details within details, paintings within paintings, as if wading through the mysterious waters of memory and dream. These works and LoCicero’s practice explore the passage of time, the way our past, present and future are fluid and connected.
