PRG is honored to present the work of Jite Agbro, a Nigerian American multi-disciplinary artist who grew up in Seattle, Washington. Her colorful figurative work integrates layered patterns, sharp contrasts, and fabric-like textures. Ranging from mixed media work to large-scale installation and murals, Agbro’s creative practice investigates the ways old and oppressive systems endure and are replicated through collective practices and rituals. Her work acknowledges how various symbols of status like clothing, accents, manners, even citizenship and lineage, are deployed to protect and preserve our identities. Simultaneously, Agbro interrogates these status symbols as tools that can perpetuate social hierarchies. She invites us to unpack the self-imposed and unexamined rules that dictate how we approach the world.
Agbro has presented solo exhibitions and large-scale installations around the Pacific Northwest, including P.L.U.A. (Proposed Land Use Action) at MadArt (2022), Deserving at Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (2019) and Skap-got at 4Culture Gallery (2018). Notable group exhibitions include the Gates Foundation 20th Anniversary at the Gates Foundation Discovery Center (2020) and Edwin T. Pratt: A Living Legacy at the Northwest African American Museum (2019). She has received support and funding from Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, The Neddy Foundation, 4Culture, Artist Trust, Shunpike and Pratt Fine Arts Center, among others.
