Guided by an interest in the duality of the human spirit, Terry Turrell’s ideas & self-expression are as endless as the wonder of a child, & perhaps as contradictory. While at first glance his work can have an edge of solemnity, it is equally playful & filled with humor. Turrell’s creative nourishment seems boundless, both highly cultured & utterly ordinary. Whether it’s music, books, poetry, art history, or the simplicity of daily walks, his backyard, a doodle, or memories, Turrell approaches his practice with an intense curiosity & drive to learn from even the most minuscule moments. That said, it is Turrell’s late wife, Loni, who remains the most influential to his artwork. For Turrell the art lies in the process itself, which he lives throughout his every day, keeping Loni’s spirit close by.
