“I recently found a trove of photographs from my college years and was struck by how enduring my fascination with light has been. While a camera captures a singular instant, the work of painting challenges me to examine, expand and stretch that moment through a process that unfolds over months. This sustained act of looking allows me to layer time, perception and memory into my painting, moving my original photograph beyond the literal image. Travel is another necessity to my practice. Out of my familiar territory, my senses are ignited in new ways, and I am particularly attuned to the way light changes in different places across time. I’m less interested in the specific elements within a composition, and more captivated by the ways they interact with light.”
