“This is that place. Created of random narratives, unknown yet familiar and personal. This place is an invitation to bring together complexities: delicate blends of color, surface and contrast, becoming a mood that can only be found here. Continents of flowers grounded in an arc of earth. Horizons on the edge of nowhere. See what you will, it is my place and yours.” – Rachel Brumer
Brumer’s landscapes are not recognizable as particular geographic places. Rather, they are fragments of nature and human existence recomposed as scenes from mind and memory. Intricate layering of hand painted textiles, Van Dyke printed shapes and forms, off kilter color combinations, and other low tech surface design techniques allow diverse elements to be in unique conversation with each other. These personal visions encourage us all to see, understand, and act to protect our earth. In this exhibition, Brumer reaches beyond the canvas by offering a book list compiled by environmental advocates and a playlist of global music. In doing so, Brumer encourages us to tap into other multi-sensory avenues of thinking and hopes to expand our understanding of these complex and challenging concepts.
