Curated by gallery director Patricia Rovzar, this group exhibition will focus on the figure and will feature work from gallery artists; Kathy Jones, Sherry Karver, Anne Siems, Marianne Kolb, Mark Beck, JD Hansen & Kensuke Yamada. In addition, we will include work from guest artists Barbara Johansen Newman and Sandy Ostrau. The selections in “Figure It Out” interpret & use the figure to convey a story or a message, communicating distinct narratives that intentionally challenge, or in some cases entertain the viewer. Throughout the ages, the human figure has appeared in art; from early cave drawings such as those found in Lascaux, to the digital images generated by computers. By referencing the figure, and using a figurative language to tell a story, the resulting imagery becomes its own narrative, and the paintings and sculpture in this exhibition focus on creating this type figurative language. These works care less about rendering the figure to exacting proportions or exacting realism and are more focused the shared fascination for storytelling.
